In a joint letter sent out late Thursday night, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo called for the privatization of Penn Station and its operations.
After weeks of delays by derailment, signal problem, “dispatcher routing error”, and a multitude of other issues, commuters and their lawmakers are beginning to get fed up with Amtrak, who owns and maintains New York Penn Station, which is the nation’s busiest rail terminal. Both the New Jersey and New York Assemblies have held hearings with Amtrak executives, to determine the source of the incessant delays and frustration.
Amtrak, in conjunction with the Long Island Rail Road, New Jersey Transit, and other entities, is currently planning a massive summer repair program to overhaul the tracks on the western side of the station, which threatens to further ruin commutes.
